Al Ghazali College is an English Medium Muslim School, guided by an Islamic ethos, supported and in part funded by the Muslim community. It comprises a Foundation Phase, Intermediate Phase and Senior Phase. The school offers educational facilities to the community of Pretoria (Laudium, Erasmia and Christoburg).

The school curriculum is integrated to allow Islamic Studies to be conducted alongside other subjects.

To qualify for admission to the school the learner should have reached the following ages in the year of admission.

No exceptions will be made to this rule unless it is a carefully considered opinion of the professional staff that a particular learner would benefit educationally and socially by repeating a year or in very exceptional cases accelerating a year. At all times the development needs of the learner will be paramount. Professional opinion will whenever necessary be supported by the use of standardised and diagnostic tests.

When applying for a place at school priority will be given to the following (provided that learners meet the assessment criteria for the entrance test):

  1. Siblings of learners already at the school.
  2. Children who have attended Reception class and seek admission to Grade 1.
  3. High achievers as illustrated in their school reports.

The availability of space will also be a determining factor. All children joining the school, with the exception of children moving from reception class, will be assessed by a member of the teaching staff before an offer of a place can be confirmed. The “Learner Admission Reference” must be completed by learners who have attended other schools and thereafter the principal of the said school must complete his/her reference.

This is to ensure that learners entering the school are able to cope with the school’s curriculum at the required grade and will settle comfortably and quickly into a new school situation. The school does not have facilities to teach English as a foreign language.

Interviews will usually be conducted during the afternoon (depending on availability of staff) and results will be communicated to parents within a week either by post or telephone.

Applications for admission in all grade classes should be submitted to the school by September before the year of expected entry. New learners will be called for interviews before the end of the third term.

The school reserves the right to move a child who is experiencing problems in coping with a particular grade within the first half of the term of such learner joining the school.

Parents shall be advised to apply well in advance for learner admission at the school. Places will be awarded in strict accordance to the admission policy and on merit.

Learners are placed in the grade group according to their date of birth (1 January – 31 December). Children usually start Grade R during the calendar year in which they turn 6. In compliance with Department Policy, children are never admitted early.

Occasionally children whose birthday falls late in the year and who are considered to be not ready for school may be advised to delay admission to the following year. The entry grade group entered by parents on the application form may be adjusted to ensure the child’s date of birth matches the school’s age requirements.

Applicants must submit the application package in full.

  1. Applications are considered under application date order and added to the waiting list according to the priority criteria.
  2. Applicants will be invited for an interview and assessment at the school as places become available – an interview with parents is included in the process.
  3. Learners who have written the assessment test and achieved a minimum of 60% but place is not immediately available, the application will be placed on top of the waiting list and the parents will be informed of this. If the learner fails to achieve a minimum of 60%, parents will be informed and the decision of the school will be final.
  4. Following a successful admission interview and assessment, a place may be offered.
  5. Acceptance of the offer must be confirmed by payment of a non-refundable deposit within the timeframe specified on the offer letter, generally a period of between 7 and 14 days.
  6. Parents will be asked to complete an Admission form. This should be completed and returned to the school along with a copy of the learner’s birth certificate or ID document and a copy of the learner’s last report.
  7. Re-application is required when a learner has not met the entry requirements at an interview and assessment.
  8. If an offer of a place is not made after interview and assessment, even though the learner meets the entry requirements for the school, as at the time places are not available, the child will be returned to the age-appropriate waiting list according to his/her priority status. In the event of a place becoming available within six months of the initial successful assessment, no further assessment will be required.
  9. All documents handed in must be certified copies of the original.

Other Documents that are required when a learner is accepted, include the:

  1. Immunisation card (specifically for Foundation Phase). Include critical medical conditions.
  2. Transfer card for learners who have been to school previously.
  3. ID documents of both parents (certified copies).
  4. Payment of School fees clearance certificate.

Additional documents required if a learner is not a South African citizen:

  1. Study permit

OR
